Tips and Tricks
-When buying a new home we always recommend having the sewer or septic line separately inspected. Most home inspectors do not offer this service. We can work alongside your home inspector and conduct the video pipe inspection so you know what you are getting yourself into. Our cameras are capable of texting, and emailing you a copy of the recording.
-As tempting as it may seem we highly advise against using any type of liquid drain clears (draino). Unless you have a newer home with all PVC piping the acid drain cleaners will eat away at your copper, cast iron, or galvanized pipes making them very brittle.
-If you are dealing with a slow draining or backed up tub when you go to plunge it remove the overflow and put a rag in there. That will be much more effective because the air will not escape from the overflow allowing for greater suction.
-A great way to maintain a free flowing kitchen sink is to of course be mindful of what goes down the drains. Not pouring grease, or anything crazy through your garbage disposal. But, once every week or two fill the sink up with a stopper and let the water drain out. What this does is instead of a trickle which is what the sink normally drains at it fills up the whole diameter of the pipe taking leftover food and debris away.
-No matter what the “flushable wipes” claim it is not true. You should never flush, or feminine products down the drain. They do not dissolve like toilet paper and will eventually back up your main line.
-If you ever find yourself in a situation where you need a professional opinion feel free to give us a call. We will do our best to walk you through it over the phone or point you in the right direction.
-We recommend pumping septic tanks out every 2-3 years. Even if your uncle said he hasn’t pumped his in 30 years and it's draining just fine.
